Linda King's "Dream Street Details" identifies the storyteller's struggle for the word, trapped in a netherworld like some minor character with few reference points, learning as they go, filled with wonder, terror, and everything in between. As one forever sewn to their past, especially their childhood, the consistent narrator of the poems certifies that "language does such gentle harm in its steel needle stitching of stories." The first section of the book entitled "some bones fit the page" consists of previously published work, paying homage to the somewhat subdued success the writing life brings and serves as an introduction to the second, main section "the clues are everywhere", which takes the reader on a journey searching for answers in the elements of language, time and place.

Linda takes us on a journey where the mundane details of domestic life meet an undercurrent of never said out loud but clearly gestured at childhood pain. The gesturing is almost more painful than if it was said straight out. With these poems you live in a world of wonder and mystery where light and dark weave a web that stays with you. The weaving of language "a rough blanket of syntax and rhythm", of childhood hurts "the number of times you died/at the hands of your mother" and domestic life "white bed feather pillows/a pureness like wedding clothes/silence the only good thing". Yet there is so much more here. One feels the words are arranged in such a way that it is a spiritual experience to read them... "everyone's childhood is the childhood of the other/where darkness and debris descend so sweetly". So despite the dark undercurrent there is compassion and a delicate vulnerability that makes one feel less alone and oddly happy to be human. ~ All my relations ~ Jonina

The first thing that got my attention in Dream Street Details is the exquisitely beautiful cover, mysterious, exotic and unusual as are many of the themes. "Dangerous things (are) made over into language. Lots of poems deal with childhood memories "that feed on everything." The fragmented poems leave room in a mysterious way to wander around in strange rooms of pink-iced cookies and Nietzsche's forgotten umbrella. Everything shifts like "dreams that take you," turn all kinds of stories and unusual images and surprises to interesting slants of light.
I can't decide which poem is my favorite? I keep reading all over and over again ! I keep going back to Abandon the color of dusk "awesome" , this poem had me immediately ! Thank you Linda for your wonderful writing!
Linda's poetry is a thoughtful expression of observations that she deftly pares down to simplicity at its best. Her ability to create nuance through carefully chosen words is stunning. The work in Dream Street Details is in the details - the simple, eloquent stringing together of language to unravel a story within, not wasting space or time. I keep several books of poetry on my bedside table so I can dip in and be swept away by the magic evoked from the pages. Dream Street is one of those books. An impressive literary accomplishment that speaks to me. It is such a pleasure to read her work.
Dream Street Details is a stunning collection from its first to last poem. At times incredibly intimate, at times elusive and metaphorical, often both, the poems in this collection may haunt you long after you've put the book down, demanding you pick it back up both for enjoyment and to further investigate the themes and meaning. There's a frailty to King's language, and a certainty. I felt left on the edge of a cliff yet also felt hands protecting me from falling too far. King demands much from the reader - much thought, insight, personal struggle. Yet is that not one of the keys to great poetry? There is disaster and ways to redeem from disaster. There is pain and the meaning that comes from pain. King seems continually present in every line yet she chooses universal images and accessible concepts toward the greater goal of fostering a new perspective.

She says

all those sounds that children forget
words you won't find in any dictionary

in its different levels of illusion
untruth has a history
its letters erase from your skin
like a reverse tattoo

That is what King does shows us different levels of illusion. But illusion has its own truth. Untruth its own history. And in recognizing our complex reality and using complex language to express it, King connects her words to our skin, which we cannot easily erase.
